With the setting of third world countries in mind, I'd talk briefly about a concept that I place a lot of importance on - the concept of personal development (PD). I define it as the whole process of identifying skills relevant to ones career and learning such skills where resources are available, without much formal educational or supervisory input. Personal development may be achieved, in most cases, in areas of activity where one derives pleasure (hobbies). From interviews conducted with youths and adults alike, I have noticed that quite a lot of skills they possess were learnt independently and gradually honed to perfection over time....an evidence of how important PD could be.
However there are several factors that in no obvious manner discourage PD
1. Environment - when we find ourselves in environments that encourage and inspire, rather that environments that have lost values, personal development relatively blossoms.
2. Resource Availability - In third world countries where the Internet is still a huge luxury, and is not readily available, there is basically almost no tool to carry out personal development.
3. A world full opportunity – a setting that appreciates and values skill also plays an important role in personal development.
4. General level of Education – the general knowledge level in a particular setting in one of the initiators of personal development. Academic standards available, quality of teaching methods all have a role to play.
